On September 29th, Catholics around the world celebrate the Feast of the Archangels: St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael. These three archangels hold a special place in Catholic tradition, each with their own unique role in God’s plan.
St. Michael – The Defender
St. Michael the Archangel is known as the great protector and leader of the heavenly armies in the battle against evil. In the Book of Revelation, he is depicted as the warrior who defeats Satan and the forces of darkness. For this reason, St. Michael is often invoked for protection in times of danger or spiritual warfare.
Many Catholic communities have a special devotion to St. Michael, particularly those seeking protection from harm. His powerful prayer, The Prayer to St. Michael, is recited often: "St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil..."
St. Gabriel – The Messenger
St. Gabriel is best known for delivering the most important message in history: the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary that she would bear the Son of God. His role as the messenger of God makes him the patron saint of communication and those who work in news or broadcasting. His presence is a reminder of the importance of listening for God's voice in our lives.
St. Raphael – The Healer
St. Raphael, whose name means "God heals," is known for his role in the Book of Tobit, where he heals Tobit’s blindness and guides Tobias on his journey. St. Raphael is the patron of healers, travelers, and those seeking guidance. He reminds us of God’s healing power, both physically and spiritually.
Celebrating the Archangels
This feast is celebrated in many Catholic communities with special Masses and prayers dedicated to the archangels. Churches dedicated to St. Michael often hold processions, asking for his continued protection. In many homes, Catholics may light candles or pray the Chaplet of St. Michael as a way of invoking his powerful intercession.
This feast also invites us to recognize the presence of angels in our lives, who work to protect, heal, and guide us on our spiritual journey.
As we honor St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael, let us be reminded of their roles in God’s divine plan and their continued intercession for us.
