The Virgin of Mercy's devotion began in the 13th century when she appeared to the King of Aragon and two saints. They asked her to establish a religious order to rescue Christians held captive by the Saracens.
This order was originally founded to redeem Christian captives from their Arab torturers during the Arab occupation of Spain in the Middle Ages. Nowadays Our Lady of Mercy is the patron saint of prisons and prisoners in general (since 1939 in Spain).
It is Celebrated on September 24th.
