The San Damiano Cross is a 12th-century Byzantine-style icon cross, renowned as the crucifix before which St. Francis of Assisi was praying in 1205 when he received the commission from Christ to "rebuild my Church". It originally hung in the crumbling San Damiano church near Assisi, Italy, and currently resides in the Basilica of St. Clare.
