La Chinita arrived in Maracaibo on the waves of the lake. One day in 1749, a simple woman was washing her clothes on the shores of Lake Maracaibo when she suddenly saw a thin wooden board floating, she picked it up thinking that it could be useful to cover a jar of water that she had in the hallway of her house.
The next morning, when she was brewing coffee, the woman heard knocking as if someone was calling. She went to see what was happening and was overwhelmed with amazement when she saw that the little board was shining and that the image of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá appeared on it.
After what happened, numerous people came to witness the miracle, thus turning the humble woman's house into a place of veneration of the Virgin by many believers.
The ecclesiastical authorities of that time decided to move the miraculous tablet to the Cathedral, but the tablet acquired a weight impossible to be lifted by the devotees, and when they diverted their course towards the hermitage or chapel of San Juan de Dios, built in 1686, it became light, thus fueling the Marian fervor of the Zulians.
